Mufflers

Mufflers perform two important functions:

·        Pass hot combustion gases out of engine and deaden live sparks

·        Muffle engine noise with minimum of back-pressure

·        (1)  Arc welded joints

-     Produce both gas- and water-tight seams

-     Many competitive mufflers are only spot welded at joints so they are vulnerable to seam splitting

·        (2)  Bigger baffle areas

-     Screen out noise without interrupting flow of gases

-     Backpressure is held to minimum allowing valves greater freedom and minimizing loss of engine power

·        (3)  Center tube and baffle plate made of quality steel

-     Steel will not oxidize under normal exhaust temperatures and will dissipate heat faster

-     Many competitive mufflers use cold-rolled steel, which is more susceptible to oxidation that causes premature muffler failure

·        (4)  Water trap

-     Eliminates water flowing back to cylinders which could damage engine

·        (5)  Special black paint

-     Heat resistant to prolong life of outer shell

-     Many competitive mufflers are covered with aluminum paint or enamel which burns off in a few short hours leaving no protection to outer shell
