Wear Characteristics and Maintenance Tips: Knifehead Pin--FH312158 and Knifehead Seal--E78721

Knifehead Pin--FH312158

The pin should be replaced when it does not fit tight in the bearing, or if surface grooves appear in the seal area.  Replace the E78721 seal and clean and replace the bearing.  This will increase the life of the pin.

Maintenance Tip

The proper torque of the E88965 knife pin is important to the life of the knifehead and arm.  When changing knives or pins, the clamp bolt through the knife arm must be tightened to 200 ft-lb.

Service Tip:  Use an 18-in. breaker bar from a 1/2-in. socket drive set.  (An adjustable torque wrench is preferable.

Note:  A 12-in. ratchet drive will NOT provide the torque necessary to tighten the clamp bolt to 200-ft-lb.

Result of insufficient torque--the bore in the knife arm will wear and cause movement between the arm and the pin.  This movement can cause the knifehead to break.

KnifeHead Seal--E78721

Replace the knifehead seal when replacing the knife sections or when a new headless knife is installed.  Clean and repack the bearing to improve service life.

The knifehead cap is no longer required and can be removed.
