Wear Characteristics and Maintenance Tips: Rules for Lubricating Bearings
Follow the rules listed below and you can expect bearings and shafts to provide maximum service.
· Always lubricate parts with recommended lubricant. Multi-purpose grease is satisfactory for most applications.
· Use clean lubricants. Be sure to store lubricants in clean, airtight containers.
· Always wipe dirt off grease fittings before attaching grease gun. After lubricating, wipe off excessive grease.
· Hold grease gun directly in line with fitting while pumping slowly. Remove gun by swinging through a 30-degree arc.
· Do not lubricate bearings too often. Sometimes excessive grease can leak onto other parts and damage them -- for example, drive belts, brake linings, and clutch linings.
· Never apply too much pressure or lubricant to bearings with seals. You may rupture the seal, allowing grease to escape and dirt and moisture to enter bearing.
· In cold weather, grease at the end of the day while the bearings are warm. They will accept grease more readily.
· Grease your machine at the recommended levels.
